Guess who’s in the awkward stage of natural hair growth?!

I am soooo happy to be in this stage finally! Most people dread this stage of hair growth but to finally get there is AWESOME! Maybe down the line I’ll get frustrated but as of now, I’m ecstatic!
Wait..what is the awkward stage?
The awkward stage of hair growth is usually when your hair is:
- between 3-5 inches long stretched out
- not short enough to label as a twa
- not long enough to make a ponytail
- still grows out instead of down
Why Do They Dread It?
When I was doing my research on the infamous ‘awkward stage’, I wondered what made it so awkward. Well, some naturals had trouble coming up with other ways to style it besides the regular twist out, bantu knot out, etc. I understand wanting to be different 100%. I googled some hairstyles that I can now do with awkward stage hair that I couldn’t with a TWA and I was amazed! I’m so happy to finally start having more versatility in my hairstyles! Some hairstyles include:
- Bigger frohawks (my favorite)
- Good ole afro
- Straw sets
- Flexirod sets
- and more!
With More Hair Comes Responsibility
Now that my hair is thicker and longer, I am going to have a lot of work to do when it comes to washing, moisturizing & styling my hair. I am glad that I started to section my hair while washing before I hit this stage so I can get a feel for it when my hair got longer. I am probably going to have to invest in some butterfly clips to help with keeping my sections separated (my hair doesn’t like hairbands). I just got a trim today so now I have to retain this length and make sure I don’t need to get it trimmed for a while.
